Short list for Supreme Court appointment?

After Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye last week relayed some “hints” about Governor Brown’s preferences, Maura Dolan reports in today’s Los Angeles Times about a short list of candidates to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno. Dolan compiled the list by talking to “judges and law professors who have been consulted about the selection.” The names purportedly on Governor Brown’s list are:

Thomas A. Saenz, the 44-year-old president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and the main focus of Dolan’s article.

Southwestern Law School professor Christopher David Ruiz Cameron.

Stanford Law School professor Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar.

First District Court of Appeal Justice Maria P. Rivera.

Second District Court of Appeal Justice Dennis M. Perluss. When he was a Superior Court judge, Perluss was on Governor Davis’s short list for the 2001 Supreme Court appointment that ultimately went to Moreno.

First District Court of Appeal Justice Martin J. Jenkins.

According to the article, “Brown has yet to interview any of the candidates, and an appointment is not believed to be imminent.”
