The Supreme Court today refused to overturn orders and directives by Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Public Health that limit in-person instruction in California schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. After requesting and receiving expedited preliminary oppositions, the court today summarily denied two original writ petitions challenging the orders and directives, one petition regarding public schools and the other regarding private schools.
The cases — the latest on the court’s pandemic docket — are Orange County Board of Education v. Newsom and Immanuel Schools v. Newsom. Both petitions were filed on August 21.
