As usual, there won’t be any Supreme Court oral arguments this summer.  The next calendar will be during the first week of September.  But that doesn’t mean the court has nothing to do until then.  It will conference once a week, except for the first week of July and August.  It will be getting cases ready for the next term’s calendars.  And the court will be issuing a bunch of opinions.

Here’s a look at the number of cases in the opinion pipeline — and the last regular filing days within the 90-day period for those undecided cases — as we enter the summer months:

Cases argued on the April calendar:  the last two undecided cases are filing tomorrow morning.

Early-May calendar cases:  Nine opinions should file by August 5.

Late-May calendar cases:  Five opinions should file by August 26.

June calendar cases:  Eight opinions should file by August 29.  A ninth opinion — in In re Masters — might file later depending on what the court does with a pending motion to delay submission of the case for further development of the record.  Yet another opinion — in ZB, N.A. v. Superior Court — is not due until September 23 because court-ordered supplemental briefing postponed the case’s submission.

So, before the justices go back to the courtroom in September, they are expected to file at least two dozen opinions.
