Govern Gavin Newsom should “appoint a current or former public defender” to succeed retired Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar on the Supreme Court.  So say Christopher Kang (co-founder of Demand Justice and a former Deputy White House Counsel to President Obama) and Anne Irwin (founder of Smart Justice California and a former San Francisco Public Defender) in today’s Sacramento Bee.

Kang and Irwin write that although the court “is a model of diversity in many respects, professional diversity is not one of them.  While more than half (four) of the justices have experience as prosecutors or assistant attorneys general, none have served as public defenders.”
