Last week, the Public Policy Institute of California hosted an hour-long virtual conversation with Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye.  Video of the event is here.

Press about the talk includes:

California Courts newsroom:  “Chief Justice Speaks on Emergency Orders, Remote Services, Diversifying California Judiciary.”

Malcolm Maclachlan in the Daily Journal:  “Chief justice calls for indexed annual court budget increases.”

Alaina Lancaster in The Recorder:  “California Chief Justice Breaks Down Pandemic Court Case Backlogs.”

What didn’t make the news, because it’s nothing new, is that the Chief Justice is very happy with her colleagues.  She said that the Supreme Court “is blessed with brilliant, collegial, thoughtful people” and that the justices “have trust with each other.”  The Chief Justice declined to take credit for the collegiality at the court, instead pointing in part to the “rigorous” “vetting process” for Supreme Court justices in California.  Cantil-Sakauye also reported that it “was very easy for [the justices] to become a remote court” during the pandemic.
