On Monday afternoon, Governor Gavin Newsom will swear in current Supreme Court Associate Justice Patricia Guerrero as California’s next Chief Justice and current Superior Court Judge Kelli Evans as a Supreme Court associate justice. (Here.) Newsom nominated Guerrero and appointed Evans to their new positions. (Here.)

Under the state constitution, Chief Justice Guerrero’s term begins “the Monday after January 1 following [her] election,” even though Monday is a judicial holiday (see here, here, and here). She was elected last month. Judge Evans will be filling the associate justice vacancy created by Guerrero’s promotion to chief justice.
