The Supreme Court is hearing arguments today in the five cases on its January calendar. This is the first public appearance with new Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero and new Associate Justice Kelli Evans.
However, only four justices — Carol Corrigan, Goodwin Liu, Leondra Kruger, and Evans — are physically in the courtroom with counsel. The chief justice and Justices Joshua Groban and Martin Jenkins are appearing remotely.
Judicial Council spokesperson Cathal Conneely reports that the chief justice is in Sacramento for Governor Newsom’s inauguration later today. He says that his “understanding is that there may have been storm-related travel issues for some others.”
[Update: In between the morning and afternoon oral argument sessions, the Chief Justice swore in Governor Newsom. Four days ago, he swore her in.]
