Governor Gavin Newsom this afternoon administered the oath of office to Patricia Guerrero, allowing her to assume her duties as a Supreme Court justice. (See here.)

Justice Guerrero is the court’s first Latina justice. Starting the ceremony, Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye noted that Justice Guerrero’s appointment is “history in the making.” She also thanked Newsom for “restoring the [court’s] four-female majority.” (See here.)

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor sent a letter congratulating Guerrero on her “historic appointment.”
